Restaurant Review: Tea Trove, Kolkata

"Kolkata Food Bloggers were invited at the launch of the new menu at Tea Trove, Deshapriya Park branch. This was my first time to this place, I was informed that there exists another Tea Trove on Elgin Road which serves a vegetarian menu. I walked in 10 mins late, my usual, to find Amrita engaged in a conversation with the cordial host and owner, Shruti. Soon after, we were introduced to the consultant Chef Mark who was instrumental in designing the menu. The fact that both the owner and the chef openly invited our ‘candid opinion’ impressed me because I now see some hope for the city food scene becoming more professional and competitive in comparison to their vintage counterparts who continue to be complacent to feedback and dishing out underwhelming food in the name of heritage."

"The Tea Trove, Deshapriya park cordially invited Kolkata Food Bloggersto the launch of their new menu which has Italian, American and Mediterranean influences. I was greeted very warmly by the owner Shruti who told me about the plunge in food industry that she and her husband have jointly taken about 2 years back. The Tea Trove has another outlet at Sarat Bose Road, which serves vegetarian food and is their maiden venture.
The place has been divided into two sitting arrangements, one with normal chairs and tables and another which has low seating with lots of cushions thrown in. Personally I felt the low seating could be a bit uncomfortable but I believe it is a big hit with the younger crowd. There were lots of board games to engage young minds and the walls have quirky lines and graphics which is definitely a pleaser to youngsters."

"We were invited as part of the Kolkata Food Bloggers to sample the new dishes of offer on their brand new menu. Located near Southern Avenue locating the cafe is not too difficult, simply cross Rashbehari Avenue if you are traveling from AJC Bose road and keep your eyes on the right for a showroom of 'Blackberry' and then take an U-turn or walk over to the other side of the road and get into the street adjacent to the showroom and walk straight ahead and the cafe is located on the left hand side of the street. You go up and notice a very low-lit place with trendy music which is being blasted from the stereo.

My fellow diners were already present and we were seated near the glass wall overlooking the street. What overwhelmed me right in the beginning was this smoky atmosphere which was a direct result of an open kitchen with no room for ventilation. This was probably one of the biggest turn offs. Throughout the evening I felt uncomfortable and my eyes were burning while I almost felt choked. "
